5. PhD in Global Health – Charité, Berlin, Germany

Sandwich track students join a cohort of young researchers in Berlin but limit their physical presence in the city. They typically limit the time spent in Berlin to research stays of 3 months or less per year. This limited on-site requirement often simplifies the process of meeting visa requirements and significantly limits overall costs of the program.

The program commences with the Sandwich track student spending an initial 3 months in Berlin (September to December), during which they complete the essential Core Course in Global Health. Following this, they return to their home country to continue their work and actively pursue their doctoral research project. They maintain continuous engagement by participating in the required Doctoral Student Seminar remotely, alongside all other PhD students.

A second research stay occurs the following year, again for 3 months (September to December), during which the student completes the required course in Mentored Teaching in Global Health. Elective courses can be completed flexibly—either in their home country, during their research stays in Germany, or even in any other country of their choice, enhancing the global perspective of their studies.

Sandwich track PhD students benefit from supervision by an interdisciplinary supervisory team that includes researchers from both the Berlin Cooperating Partners and their home institution. While the first supervisor must be from the Berlin Coorperating Partners, the program aims to provide a shared and collaborative supervision model.
