🌍 Fully Funded PhD Positions in Quantum Computing at AIMS, Cape Town (Jan 2026 Start)

The Quantum@AIMS research group at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town, South Africa, is inviting applications for two fully funded PhD positions in Quantum Computing and Quantum Information, starting January 1st, 2026. The group is led by Dr. Ryan Sweke, and the positions are part of the AIMS/Freie Universität Berlin Quantum Computing Partnership, funded by DAAD.

These prestigious PhD roles offer a rare opportunity to conduct foundational research at the cutting edge of quantum information, machine learning, and cryptography, with cross-continental collaboration and annual research visits to Berlin, Germany.

🔬 Research Focus Areas

Selected PhD candidates will work on fundamental theoretical topics such as:

  • Quantum Machine Learning:
Investigating whether quantum systems provide provable advantages in learning models.
  • Cryptographic Foundations:
Developing quantum-secure cryptographic protocols and studying quantum limitations.
  • Learning Quantum Systems:
Designing efficient algorithms for understanding unknown quantum states and processes.
  • Distributed Quantum Algorithms:
Exploring the implementation of secure quantum learning in multi-party environments.
  • Post-Quantum Security Models:
Researching cryptography in environments lacking one-way functions.

This research is ideal for highly analytical minds with a passion for mathematical rigor and theoretical innovation at the intersection of physics, mathematics, and computer science.

🎓 Eligibility Criteria
