The Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori (IUSS) Pavia, in collaboration with the University of Pavia, invites applications for its esteemed PhD program in Earthquake Engineering for the academic year 2025/2026. This program, known as the ROSE (Reduction of Seismic Risk) Doctoral Program, is designed to cultivate experts in seismic risk mitigation through advanced research and interdisciplinary training.

🧪 What Is the ROSE Program?

The ROSE (Reduction of Seismic Risk) program is a globally recognized doctoral initiative that combines rigorous academic coursework with real-world applications. It trains future leaders and researchers who will shape the future of earthquake engineering and risk reduction.

Program Highlights:

  • Duration: 36 months, commencing in October 2025.

  • Language: All courses and research activities are conducted in English.

Available Positions and Funding:

A total of 8 funded positions are available:

  1. IUSS-Funded Positions (2): Open to candidates with a strong academic background in civil engineering, geophysics, or related fields.

  2. FIS2 Project Positions (3): Funded by IUSS under the FIS2 Starting Grant, focusing on data-driven seismic risk assessment and management of the built environment.

  3. Eucentre Foundation Positions (2): Scholarships funded by the Eucentre Foundation, with research topics to be determined at the program’s outset.

  4. University of Pavia Position (1): Funded by the University of Pavia, supporting research in innovative seismic risk mitigation strategies.

Research Areas:

The program encompasses a wide range of research topics, including but not limited to:

  • Structural dynamics and earthquake-resistant design.

  • Engineering seismology and seismic hazard analysis.

  • Geotechnical engineering and soil-structure interaction.

  • Assessment and retrofitting of existing structures.

  • Development of innovative materials and technologies for seismic resilience.

Application Requirements:

Applicants must submit the following documents:

Evaluation Procedure:

The selection process involves two stages:

  1. Qualification Assessment: The Evaluation Committee will review submitted documents, awarding up to 50 points. Candidates scoring at least 36 points will progress to the interview stage.

  2. Interview: Candidates will discuss their scientific background, research interests, and respond to technical questions. A minimum score of 36 out of 50 is required for admission. Interviews may be conducted online if necessary.

    The selection process includes two main phases:

    1. Qualification Assessment (Max: 50 points)
      Based on academic records, research experience, publications, and CV.
      Candidates scoring at least 36/50 will move to the interview stage.

    2. Interview Phase (Max: 50 points)
      Can be held in-person or online. The interview covers the candidate’s:

      • Research interests and background

      • Technical and scientific knowledge

      • Motivation and fit for the program

    To be admitted, candidates must achieve at least 36/50 in the interview.
