The focus of recruitment in 2025 will still be AI and quantum technologies. I am considering students from Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics for the positions.

My lab always welcomes postdocs and Ph.D. students good at power system/microgrid transients, dynamics, and stability (with software platform architecturing and programming experiences), computer networking (e.g., analysis and coding with OpenFlow switches) and/or cybersecurity (e.g., network security and applied cryptography.

Position Description

Stony Brook Power Systems Lab seeks Ph.D. students to lead and conduct research in the areas of networked microgrids, AI-Grid, quantum-grid, and formal methods for resilient power grids.

The successful applicant will work with a team in support of various projects and programs. Research focus is on the following:

  • AI-enabled provably resilient power grids.
  • Formal methods for microgrid/macrogrid stability, control, and cybersecurity.
  • Smart Programmable Microgrids.
  • Networked microgrids: distributed safe learning, formal control synthesis and stability.
  • Quantum-enabled smart grid.
  • Wave and wind power systems, ocean power grid, marine microgrids, Internet of Ocean Things.

Position Requirements

  • PhD applicants should have research experience in one of the following: power systems, power electronics, computer sciences or computer engineering, applied mathematics. For BS graduate – top GPA is required; For MS graduate – she or he should have at least one first-author paper accepted or under review, or two first-author papers in proceedings of major conferences.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to explore new areas, and ability to work with others as part of a project team.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with one or more of the following: microgrids, formal methods and rechability analysis, power system dynamics, eigenanalysis, stability analysis, real-time simulation (RTDS), computer networking, software-defined networking, distributed methods, cybersecurity.
