The Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University is now recruiting a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) to pursue a fully funded Ph.D. in Biosystems Engineering starting in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026.

🔬 Research Areas: Building a Greener Future
The selected Ph.D. student will engage in a blend of experimental and computational research. You will investigate and develop bio-based systems that convert waste into valuable resources, supporting a sustainable and circular economy.
The core research areas include:

Bioprocessing and Waste Valorization
Innovating new ways to convert agricultural, industrial, and municipal waste into bioenergy, biochemicals, or biofertilizers. -
Circular Bioeconomy and Sustainability Assessment
Designing closed-loop systems that minimize waste and environmental impact while enhancing resource efficiency. -
Development of Sustainable Bio-Based Products
Exploring new materials, fuels, and value-added products made from renewable biological resources. -
Experimental Research + Computational Modeling
Combining hands-on lab work with advanced modeling tools to analyze system performance and environmental impacts.
This research will contribute to creating real-world solutions to address climate change, waste management, and renewable energy demands.

✅ Qualifications:

Master’s degree (M.S.) in one of the following disciplines:

Biosystems Engineering

Environmental Engineering

Agricultural Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

Chemical Engineering

Or a related field

Outstanding candidates with only a Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) will also be considered.
✅ Desirable Experience:

Research or project experience in:

Biomass processing
-
Bioenergy systems

Bioproduct development

Familiarity with laboratory-scale or pilot-scale bioprocessing is a plus.
✅ Technical Skills (Preferred but Not Required):

SuperPro Designer – Process modeling for biomanufacturing

openLCA – Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of sustainable systems

ArcGIS – Spatial data analysis and environmental mapping

Python – For data analysis, automation, and modeling
