🔬 PhD Project 1: Investigating the Impacts of Freshwater Acidification and Trace Metals on Algae
✅ Overview
This project will examine how freshwater acidification and trace metals influence the structure and function of algal communities in river systems. The project is a key part of the MBIE Endeavour Programme titled “Safeguarding Te Mana o te Awa o Waikato from Emerging Climatic Pressures.”
🧪 Research Objectives:

Study the biochemical and ecological responses of algae to varying pH levels and metal concentrations.

This exciting PhD will explore nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria that thrive in extreme ecosystems, such as Antarctica. The research spans across two groundbreaking projects:

An MBIE Smart Idea project aiming to develop climate-positive nitrogen fertilisers using native cyanobacteria.

A Marsden Fast Start project focused on survival mechanisms of Antarctic microbial life.
