These research projects aim to address global challenges around freshwater health, climate resilience, and innovative biotechnological solutions.

🔬 PhD Project 1: Investigating the Impacts of Freshwater Acidification and Trace Metals on Algae

✅ Overview

This project will examine how freshwater acidification and trace metals influence the structure and function of algal communities in river systems. The project is a key part of the MBIE Endeavour Programme titled “Safeguarding Te Mana o te Awa o Waikato from Emerging Climatic Pressures.”

🧪 Research Objectives:

  • Study the biochemical and ecological responses of algae to varying pH levels and metal concentrations.

  • Evaluate ecosystem impacts in the context of climate-induced changes.

  • Collaborate with Māori kaitiaki (guardians) to align scientific outputs with Indigenous values and local knowledge.

  • Inform freshwater policy and management strategies for Te Awa o Waikato, one of New Zealand’s most significant rivers.

🧬 PhD Project 2: Characterising Nitrogen-Fixing Cyanobacteria from Extreme Environments

✅ Overview

This exciting PhD will explore nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria that thrive in extreme ecosystems, such as Antarctica. The research spans across two groundbreaking projects:

  • An MBIE Smart Idea project aiming to develop climate-positive nitrogen fertilisers using native cyanobacteria.

  • A Marsden Fast Start project focused on survival mechanisms of Antarctic microbial life.

🧪 Research Objectives:

  • Isolate, culture, and analyse cyanobacterial strains from extreme habitats.

  • Characterise nitrogen fixation potential under varying environmental conditions.

  • Contribute to innovations in biofertiliser technology and astrobiology-inspired survival research.

  • Advance New Zealand’s leadership in biotechnology and polar research.
