Bio-Engineering of Biochar for Enhanced Environmental Remediation

🔍 About the Project:

This project addresses the urgent need for effective soil remediation technologies in the UK, where approximately 300,000 contaminated sites exist. It pioneers a novel approach by engineering microbe-biochar composite materials (MBCs), combining the unique properties of biochar with specific microbial species to enhance bioremediation of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

• First synthesis study matching biochar materials with microbes.

• Application of state-of-the-art material characterization techniques.

• Exploration of microbial interaction, attachment, and biofilm formation on biochar.

The successful candidate will work within the Environmental Biotechnology Innovation Centre (EBIC: https://ebicentre.co.uk), a £13 million collaboration across 10 UK universities focused on developing cutting-edge solutions in environmental engineering and biotechnology.
